NWS urged to maintain domgas supply

WESTERN Australia’s largest gas users have called on the North West Shelf gas partners to commit to maintaining current levels of domestic gas supply until at least 2025.

The call comes amid reports the NWS joint venture is marketing 20 million tonnes of LNG for the 2015-25 period at a time when domestic gas contracts are expiring and users are struggling to secure future supply contracts.

“The North West Shelf Project is the single biggest energy supplier to the State with domestic supply capacity equivalent to around 4 million tonnes of LNG every year,” DomGas Alliance chairman Tony Petersen said.

“WA businesses and households deserve certainty that current supply volumes will be maintained to 2025 and beyond.”

The Alliance, which represents companies such as Alcoa, Alinta, FMG and ERM Power, noted the WA parliamentary committee inquiry into domestic gas prices had urged the state government to secure a commitment from NWS to maintain supply at current levels until at least 2025.

“It should be remembered that development of the project was made possible with significant financial support by the state and gas users,” Petersen said.

“The project has been an important part of the WA business community and the backbone of the state’s energy security for the last 25 years. What we are now seeking is a firm commitment to the state’s future energy needs.

“Unless current levels of domestic supply are maintained, investment, growth and jobs in the state will be lost.”
